FAQ
What are commercial voice-over services?
Those voice overs I provide that promote products or services via advertising media such as seen or heard on TV, radio, web and other broadcast and non-broadcast media.
How do I choose the right voice for my project?
You should break it down according to the appeal of the audience you want to reach. As in gender, age, geographic location and demographic group.Use only voices that sound age appropriate and possess those specific qualities that will enhance the script you are working with. Be clever in your choices and allow the voices you choose to be free to ad personality and character to the lines. Quite often voice actors with a musical, improv or acting background make the most interesting talent to work with.
Do I need a script prepared before hiring a voice-over artist?
Yes, you will need a professionally written script using proper grammar technique… punctuation markings, upper and lower case characters, correct spelling and proper use of tense. Please do not wright in ALL CAPS. This mistake is made often and does not show the voice actor any “emphasis” you wish to be placed on certain words or phrases. ALL CAPS is also very tiring for the voice actor to read while he is performing and interpreting your script. It is also a good idea to use (parentheses) describing any particular emotion you would like to hear in the voice actor’s tone. Give the voice actor “cues” throughout the script showing how the video and/or sound effect will be placed.Remember when writing a script that you are NOT texting or emailing a friend. So use complete sentences with proper punctuation. And no abbreviations, colloquial memes or acronyms. Include proper pronunciation of names. places, terminology, IDs, etc. Best done by writing out those terms
phonetically.
Can I request revisions after the voice-over is recorded?
Yes. Usually the voice actor will include one single revision (requested within 30 days of original recording) to be done at no charge. After 30 days charges may be made. However, this should be discussed prior to the beginning of recording. Especially when the script is of significant length, the revisions may also be of significant length. When recording a long form project and the revisions are extensive, the voice actor will often set his/her charges based upon a percentage of the overall script length. Such as, if 25% of the script is being revised, the extra charges will reflect that portion of the script. If the revisions involve a “performance” issue on the part of the voice actor, further negotiation may be needed. Proper and specific direction given to the voice actor prior to any recording is essential before recording begins. Both client and voice actor need to “be on the same page” initially.
How can I find a reliable voice-over artist for my project?
Most professional talent are easily accessible by finding their website and contacting them. Utilizing specific keywords such as “americana, all-american, baritone, manly, masculine, etc”… all of which can be used to find me at Rick Lance Studio… will help in your internet search. Keywords or phrases will certainly narrow your search to individual websites where you can listen to samples of their work and send inquiries to them. You can also contact some of the talent agencies around the country and listen through their talent rosters to find a suitable voice.
